Muslim Death: In-House Death Protocol
If the death happens at home, the following steps should be taken by the family:
- Call 911 and let them know someone has passed away and you need them to pronounce the time of death.
- If it is determined that the cause of death is natural, they will provide you with a waiver number. You can then reach out to the mortuary and share the waiver number with them.
- If the cause of death is unknown, they might deem it necessary to further investigate and call the medical examiner to pick up the deceased. You can contact the mortuary and give them the medical examiner’s case number, and they will typically follow up with the medical examiner and pick the deceased up once they are ready for release.
If the death happens at home and the deceased is in hospice the following steps should be taken by the family:
- Contact the nurse from the hospice agency so they can pronounce the time of death.
- Let the nurse know if you have a preferred mortuary. The nurse will initiate contact with the mortuary to pick up the deceased after the time of death has been pronounced.
Muslim Death: Hospital or Nursing Home Death Protocol:
- Upon declaration of death by the staff representative (RN nurse, doctor, or certified medical representative), the family representatives of the deceased shall notify their preferred mortuary.
- The Mortuary will pick up the deceased from the home or hospital and transport the deceased to their facility. The Mortuary is also responsible for completing all of the required legal paperwork
Ghusl
- The body of the deceased shall be held at the Mortuary in an isolated temperature-controlled environment (morgue cooler) until the initiation of religious services (ghusl, shrouding, and viewing) then placed back into the cooler until the time of burial.
- To prepare the body for burial, it must be washed (ghusl) and shrouded (kafan). Close same-sex family members are encouraged to give the ghusl. It is also recommended that as few people as needed should participate in the ghusl process out of respect for the deceased.
- The mortuary can contact personnel to assist with or perform the ghusl of the deceased if needed.
- Under no circumstances will it be permitted to wash the bodies of the opposite gender – except husband and wives opting for undertaking the task.
Janazah
The Janazah salah is typically performed at the cemetery right before the burial.
